Coding + Conversation in Ao3 Comments
Mar. 2nd, 2024 09:37 pmBack so soon -- thise feels almost spammy on such a laidback website as Dreamwidth. So hey, no obligation to subscribe or comment.
Regular Expressions -- "regex" -- let you design a pattern for how expect text to look and what sub-patterns you'd expect inside. In my case, the pattern was /Request by ([^\(]*)?\(?([^\)]*)/g Which means: "I'm looking for the words "request by ", then I'm looking for some text that doesn't include a bracket, and after the bracket I'm looking for some more text that doesn't include a bracket. Then with [a little code] I ask regex to tell me about the [prompt] header "Request by cottontailcake (RabbitPie)" and it tells me "Hey I found two things you were looking for -- "cottontailcake " and "RabbitPie"
My next problem was the fact that I'd accidentally "committed" (created save points/backups) my "repo" ([project]) under my wallet ID about 20 times. [With a little help] though, it was back under my fandom ID. Following that guide requires editing your text from the terminal though, and ew, my default editor is Vim! It's the most confusing terminal text editor in existence, and I should change it, because I don't enjoy looking up "how do I do x in Vim?" every time in need to write something. (the worst part is that even exiting is hard, and there's nothing telling you you are even in Vim, I'm sure some baby programmers have abandoned the art due to that inscrutable program.)
After that, I tried uploading my code to git, but it said I couldn't because my code belonged to the original ao3.js repo(sitory), not thenew repo I'd made for it. I told it to forget about that, but in doing so seem to have completely separated my repo from the original ao3.js. [This guide] assured me the process of linking back to ao3.js was going to be easy... but the connection isn't visible on the git website. Whelp.
So that was the coding adventures. Not a lot all told, but some very necessary things I'd been putting off!
Fandom Arting
Finished working on the lines of my WIP! And I started trying out colours, but I really need to start studying some references at least.
ps. just added the dabihawks ao3 feed; I think it was a mistake XD I maybe I need a modified form that updates once a day.
Fandom Coding
I wrote the code to fill the tests from yesterday. It took a while, but the tests were passing on the first try, which... is really a testament to both how I've improved as a programmer and how helpful the tools are that I'm using. One of those tools was [regex101.com], which I usually use to write and test my regular expressions.Regular Expressions -- "regex" -- let you design a pattern for how expect text to look and what sub-patterns you'd expect inside. I had an interesting chat to some folks about AO3 commenting culture. One of us was reminicing about "the good old days" when ao3 comments were where people had lively chats. Another was talking about how in their fandom (iirc youtube minecraft) there were often conversations so long they turned the replies into skinny spaghetti strands of fragmented words. I never recall much conversation on ao3 myself, but I love seeing it and participating in it, and I think it's worth asking an author if they'd like conversation in their comments -- they might not even thought of it, and as one of my conversation parters said, maybe they do but aren't comfortable asking. For some authors, it'd be nice for a reader to take the first step.Recs & Reads
- Today's feeds brought to my attention [A vampire knife fit for Toga].
- Very excited to see dorothycanfly's new Dabihawks fic [Wild horses couldn't drag me away] (Rated E).
- [This art of Rei holding young Touya and post recent confrontation Touya is hitting me somewhere hard and uncomfortable]
- ... I just really enjoy this one [Youtuber who likes puzzles].

Date: 2024-03-04 01:45 pm (UTC)Personally I don't consider AO3 conversations in the comments default, as a reader I usually just respond to the chapter and rarely read other people's comments. As an author, on occasion I HAVE on rare occasion seen people start having conversations with each other, and I sometimes find it strange but I certainly don't mind. It's interesting to hear that different fandoms/spaces/times have had different prevailing conventions!
